Mental Health is important

 

My mental health isn’t going to stop me. I get one life. I’m going to do everything I can to enjoy mine.

“My mental health isn’t going to stop me. I get one life. I’m going to do everything I can to enjoy mine.”

That was the thought I had the last time I seriously thought about ending my life.

Then another thought popped into my head.

“Since when do I do what I’m meant to do!”

It felt like I should give up on life so I decided to do the opposite.


That was 6 years ago whilst I was on a empty midday train down to Bristol. I’d slept about two hours. I’d had three panic attacks between getting up and walking 1 mile to the local station. I was exhausted. It was a normal day in the life of George. My mental health wasn’t working.

I can now look back at that with a weird fondness. It led me to where I am today. I now love my life, and I’ve learnt how to live a life I love. But it’s been hard work – I’ve read every book imaginable, tried every diet, therapy, fad, trick that is available, but now I know how to live a life that works.

My life is now about shortcutting the process for those of you who want to deal with your problems. I am teaching you how to build a lifestyle that supports good mental health, I’m showing you how to train your mind to deal with all the sadness, unhappiness, worry, and disempowering hopelessness that goes on in there.

I say “Fuck that. It doesn’t have to be shit”. Not on my watch.


It began

And that’s why I joined up with the other founders to start the Smile Tribe.

But I want to be clear, the Smile Tribe is for everyone. We all have mental health after all.

I’ve been there. Panic attacks, depression, suicidal thoughts, social anxiety, eating disorders. They are the extreme. Not everyone has these, but if you do, I want to know they can go away.

Mental Health is also so much broader than that. It is also work stress, family stress, grieving, mild anxiety, anger, fear of failure. These are things I still deal with everyday and things that everyone has. If you are up to anything in life other than meditating by a still pond, they are going to happen.

But we can master these thoughts too, so that we are so much more effective at living happy, successful lives.

I want to get a bit visionary with this, because after all, that’s what I’m about.

To me this mental health story goes so much bigger. Harnessing our Mental health can massively shift the future of humanity.

I think about myself. 6 years ago I could hardly leave my house, I couldn’t get a job and I hated my life.

Now I can contribute to society. Getting past my own issues gives me the chance to focus on others. If everyone in society improved their mental health by 10%, imagine the impact that would have on productivity and contribution to society, imagine how much faster all our problems would go away.


Anyway, enough of the visionary stuff. The Smile Tribe is about fun and positive mental health.
